How I got here

Design & Visual Arts

I am a designer for about 12 years by now, that’s almost half of my life.
It all began when my dad started a two-year vocational training in Media & Web Design. One day, he came home with a Power Mac G4 and Adobe Photoshop 7.0. And I was haunted.
Already, I had been much into photography and creating videos with my dad’s cameras and that passion increased when I started using the Mac. Back in those, days, it was by far the ultimate machine for creating creative content.
So, in the course of years, I learned the basics of design and web developing. I used to create graphics, play with all sorts of calligraphy and created my own homepage.
As a teenager I started to make flyers and websites, take photos or create videos for money. By the time I graduated from high school, I had gathered a client base of 15-20 people. And the rest, as we know, is history written in my CV.

Technology

Ever since I was a little kid I used to fiddle around with TVs, media players and phones and dig deep into their endless settings menus, which eventually made me become the tech nerd for family and friends.
I would help them with their tech-emergencies and teach them how to set up the new gadget they’ve bought.
I suppose that helped me to develop an ability to rapidly understand technical matters – especially surrounding software.
I could be handed a totally unfamiliar device or a system and I somehow would figure out what it would do and how it works within a few minutes.
And as I progressed it was not only the interaction with software which would interest me but rather the information architecture and hardware which was behind it. That’s how I got into developing and creating apps and gadgets.

As soon as you’ve gotten into software development you realize it’s like a never ending odyssey through languages and frameworks. Just after having mastered a framework a new one comes along. With that being said, my understanding of coding languages is not limited to the ones mentioned below. In fact, I am constantly trying to expand & improve my coding skills in order to make them as strong as my design skills.

Book Recommendations

I was never a fan of cable TV. VOD services and Youtube offer valuable and entertaining content and good networks offer their programs also online. I highly suggest that you go ahead and cut that cord.

A short overview of some books I find very useful, worthy and enjoyable to read which teach many things you can use in your personal and professional life.
To the millennials out there: reading a book is a great experience, you should try it!
